At least 25 people, mostly teenagers and children, lost their lives when a bus plunged off a steep cliff in the Atlantic island nation of Cape Verde.
The disaster unfolded on Saturday along the rugged Campanas de Cima route on Fogo Island. A passenger bus carrying students returning from an outing veered off the mountainous road, tumbling roughly 30 meters down a precipitous drop. The driver was among those killed instantly, and emergency services reported that multiple other passengers sustained severe injuries.
Local health authorities faced an immediate crisis in the aftermath. Due to the extreme condition of some remains following the fall, seven bodies had to be buried almost immediately.

President José Maria Pereira Neves took to social media to address the nation, labeling the tragedy "a great catastrophe". High-ranking government officials rushed to Fogo Island to coordinate emergency relief and offer support to grieving families.
