Disaster agencies report that 987 people have died in Nepal alone, while Chinese authorities confirmed 16 deaths in Tibet. Embassies from the United States, the United Kingdom, Australia, Malaysia, and Ukraine have also reported dozens of missing citizens who were traveling or working in the region. Neighboring Indian authorities in Uttar Pradesh have already recovered 17 bodies from rivers flowing down from Nepal, confirming fears that the torrent carried victims across international borders.
Families searching for loved ones face heartbreaking identification procedures. Because local health risks forced authorities to temporarily inter a large number of recovered remains, officials are relying heavily on photographs, physical descriptions, and DNA matching with first-degree relatives.
