Two people were killed and six others injured inside a downtown Minneapolis apartment complex when a gunman opened fire, triggering a massive emergency response that placed the surrounding neighborhood on lockdown. The incident unfolded at the building located at 15 East Grant Street, formerly known as Loring Towers, near the Minneapolis Convention Center.
Emergency calls started flooding dispatchers just after 4:30 p.m., reporting gunfire inside the multi-story residential tower. Interim Minneapolis Police Chief Bill Peterson noted that officers arrived within two minutes of the initial call, charging directly into the building while gunshots echoed through the hallways.
As officers pushed toward the upper floors to track down the shooter, they encountered a thick haze that heavily restricted visibility. The suspect, who police confirmed was already known to law enforcement prior to the shooting, died at the scene. Authorities have not yet officially detailed the exact cause or manner of the suspect's death.
The violence left three police officers among the injured. Two officers sustained gunshot wounds—one taking a round to the leg and another struck twice in the abdomen—while a third officer suffered other injuries during the chaotic response. Hennepin County Medical Center confirmed that the wounded officers, along with other victims transported for care, were listed in stable condition and expected to survive. Two additional officers sustained minor injuries when their squad car crashed while rushing to the scene.
Residents trapped inside the complex described moments of sheer terror. Elevators opened to the sound of rapid gunfire, prompting tenants to slam doors shut, hide in bathrooms, and pray for safety. Witnesses reported hearing roughly eight rapid gunshots in quick succession, while video footage broadcasted online showed tactical units and armed officers training rifles on the upper windows of the tower.
Federal agencies quickly mobilized to support local responders. The Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives deployed personnel to assist Minneapolis police with the active investigation. Minnesota Governor Tim Walz issued a statement praising the swift response of first responders and offering state support to the affected neighborhood.
