When a bog is drained for pasture or fuel, the oxygen-starved layers dry out. Microbes attack the exposed organic matter, releasing centuries of locked carbon dioxide back into the atmosphere.

Fixing this damage requires an aggressive, muddy reversal of historic drainage networks. Government grants often cover the capital expense of digging dams, but they rarely account for long-term maintenance or the loss of agricultural utility. Without fair, long-term economic structures that directly enrich the local land stewards, bog restoration remains a fragile, donor-dependent experiment.
